About Garrit Pruyt
Garrit Pruyt grew up in Boulder City, Nevada, and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Upon earning an academic scholarship, Pruyt attended Florida Coastal School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor. While in law school, Pruyt served as a Law Clerk Extern with the Nevada Supreme Court, handled foreclosures and small claims in the Florida Fifth Circuit Court, and interned in both the Clark County Public Defender's Office and the District Attorney's Office.
Following graduation, he served as law clerk to Judge Michael Villani of the Nevada Eighth Judicial District Court. After his clerkship, Pruyt returned to Carson City and started litigation practice with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General in the areas of civil rights and medical malpractice law. Pruyt served as a prosecutor in the Carson City District Attorney's Office for the last ten years. Pruyt's passion for protecting Nevada families and resolute determination to seek justice were evident from the beginning. Pruyt was immediately prosecuting cases to trial and securing consistent verdicts for the Carson City community. Pruyt prosecuted a wide range of offenses, including theft, embezzlement, domestic battery, violations of protective orders, trespass, DUI, reckless causing death, illegal firearms, robbery, burglary, sexual assault, and murder.
Pruyt quickly rose through the ranks of the District Attorney's Office, being promoted to Supervising Deputy, then Criminal Chief, and was ultimately unanimously appointed as District Attorney by the Carson City Board of Supervisors in 2024. As District Attorney, Pruyt increased victims’ access to the court system by implementing improved notification systems, emphasizing victim-centered prosecution, and partnering with the Justice Court to improve the Court's bail-hearing schedule.
To better address the needs of abused and neglected children, Pruyt partnered with Serving Our Communities and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office to open the Carson City Rural Child Advocacy Center. This facility provides a safe environment for children who have been victims of some of the most heinous crimes to be interviewed by law enforcement in a forensically sound manner.
Garrit Pruyt and his wife, Casey, an operating room nurse, live in Carson with their three children. When not working on middle and elementary school homework, the Pruyt family can be found camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, or enjoying one of Carson City's many mountain biking trails.
Pruyt currently serves as President of the Nevada District Attorney's Association, as a member of the Juvenile Justice Commission, a member of the Carson City Student Attendance Review Board, and a member of the Carson Rural Child Advocacy Center's Board of Directors. Pruyt volunteers as a summer camp director with his local congregation and previously volunteered as a Scoutmaster and Chair of the Washoe Tribal Headstart Policy Council.
